27th September to 2nd October 2017 10.00am - 4.00pm daily

The final archaeological dig of the Community Archaeology Project will comprise a second phase of work at the Iron-Age enclosure site at Common Slap near Fenham overlooking Holy Island.

The aim of the excavation is to locate and dig sections through the Iron-Age enclosure ditch, with the hope of getting diagnostic finds and good palaeoenvironmental samples from the primary fill of the ditch, as well as from the upper layers which (in part) suggest later reuse in the Medieval period as a possible 'hollow-way' track.

Meet at 10am at the end of the road where parking will be available in the field next to the Natural England sign (in the same location as last year - see map attached). We will walk together to the site near the cliff edge at Common Slap, a walk of around 10 minutes.

Please bear in mind, as we approach the end of the digging season the weather can be unpredictable. Remember to take layers of warm, waterproof clothing, hats & gloves, appropriate footware etc, drinks and a packed lunch.

Please find two useful location maps below.
