Learn more about this iconic landform and the special habitat it gives life to - 10am to 1pm, Saturday 24 of June on Holy Island.

The Whin Sill was forged in molten rock at blast furnace temperatures and carved by ice to make the foundations for Lindisfarne Castle and the dyke known as the Heugh. The combination of the shape of the Whin Sill outcrops, their location and chemistry have also conspired to create a wonderfully diverse grassland habitat with some very rare, as well as some very pretty, plants.

This walk will be an opportunity to understand more about how the geology of the Whin Sill contributes to the Whin grassland as well as exploring the diversity of plants to be found.

Approximately 3 km in length and may involve some scrambling across rocks on the foreshore.

Meet at Window on the Wild, Holy Island at 10am. No need to book.

The Peregrini Lindisfarne Landscape Partnership Scheme is managed by a Partnership of professional and community representatives from Holy Island and surrounding shore side area. The lead organisation for the Scheme is the Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) Partnership, hosted by Northumberland County Council.
